My Last Job Interview Could Not Have Possibly Gone Any Better
I just had a job interview that could not have possibly gone any better. It was my second interview with the company. Going into it, I was expecting to really dive into the details of what these people were looking for in a new colleague. But that is not what my interviewer had in mind. He immediately made it clear he was interested in finding someone who possessed “the intangibles.” “We’re not really looking for someone with any particular hard skills,” he said. “We want someone who’s a team player and is willing to learn.”
Buddy, I’m glad we connected on Microsoft Teams, because I am all three of those things. I am a team player without hard skills who is willing to learn. Boom, boom, boom. Are we done here? How do I start the onboarding process? Sorry, I’m not trying to get ahead of myself. I’m just saying, the intangibles are my wheelhouse. Always have been. You said you’re hiring based on “feel?” That’s perfect, because feel is my bread and butter. I’m not gonna go into the details of what that means. When you start explaining things, you actually lose feel. And I’m feeling like this is meant to be, so what are we waiting for?
The chemistry was palpable. Just when I thought this guy was about to launch into his expectations for daily content, we started vibing on the importance of honesty in the workplace. It didn’t really matter whether I knew how to use MailChimp, because you can teach that stuff. In fact, YouTube teaches it just fine, so don’t even worry about it. You can’t teach honesty, though. It’s one of the intangibles, along with empathy, compassion and authenticity. You know, the good stuff. And that’s what this guy was looking for.
In a world where employers only seem to be interested in achievements, qualifications, and “what exactly I’ve been up to for the last two years,” this interview was a breath of fresh air. I can’t wait to find out if I got the job. I probably did. This guy seemed impressed. We definitely caught a wave together. I am hoping he feels the same way, because when it came to those one or two specific questions he asked about my latest freelance work, I’ll be honest: I have no idea what I said. Full blackout. Can’t imagine the amount of dogshit that was coming out of my mouth for those five minutes. But for the rest of the half-hour? Your boy killed it. I’ll keep y’all posted on the results.
